Origin egress from EC2/S3 to CloudFront edges is free, but CloudFront delivery to end users still costs $0.08 to $0.085 per GB in NA/EU. High-traffic sites bleed money against flat-rate Cloudflare or Bunny tiers.
When not to pick AWS CloudFront
- Your traffic is dominated by a region where this vendor lacks PoPs (check the region pricing table).
- You need a flat monthly bill with no overage variance (Cloudflare or CDN77 bundles fit better).
- You need WAF, bot management, image optimisation in the same SKU (see the bundles page).
- You already buy compute on a hyperscaler and origin egress savings dwarf CDN egress (CloudFront for AWS, Cloud CDN for GCP, Front Door for Azure).
